Using downloaded files in external programs

Last Updated 6 months ago

When you download transcoded HLS formats, the Quickchannel platform converts them to fragmented MP4 files on-the-fly. Such MP4s might not be properly supported in some 3rd party applications; you might fail to import them altogether, or they might seem only 5 seconds long:

If you encounter these problems with software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Microsoft Stream etc., check the following steps:
  • Make sure to download the original (source) file. You can check how to find source files in a separate article here.

  • If the media was created by:
    • Trimming VOD to a new clip
    • Trimming live highlights to a new clip
    • Rendering an Editor project to a video clip

and/or the original media source file is not available, the recommended workaround is to convert your file, e.g., using VLC Media Player:
  1. Add your video to VLC media player, go to File>Convert/Stream:

  2. Drop your media here, from the list choose H.264+MP3 and as a destination - Save as file:

  3. Click Save in the bottom right.

An alternative solution is to enable storage of MP4 files in the desired higher (or highest) resolution (by default, only 360p is stored) – contact your Customer Success representative to make the change on your account. You can then download these H.264 MP4 files in Console, and they would function as expected in virtually any video software. The downside is that keeping MP4s in more resolutions would increase the storage costs on your account.
